The Government of Canada is taking steps towards achieving its goal of zero plastic waste by launching consultations on a regulatory framework for recycled content and labeling of plastic products. Currently, less than 15% of plastic packaging waste in Canada is recycled, and labeling inaccuracies lead to confusion among consumers.

The government is also considering the establishment of a federal plastics registry to harmonize data and hold producers responsible for their products’ end-of-life management. Canada is actively collaborating with international partners and advocating for a global transition to a circular economy for plastics to address plastic pollution on a larger scale.
