Australian federal and state governments have agreed to impose mandatory packaging rules on manufacturers and retailers, aiming to reduce waste and boost recycling. The new regulations, seen as a breakthrough by conservationists, will enforce packaging design based on international best practice, regulate harmful chemicals and contaminants, harmonize waste collection, and introduce traceability for recycled content.

The move comes as Australia struggles to meet its recycling targets, with just 18% of plastic packaging being recycled, and aims to shift the country towards a circular economy and combat plastic pollution.
