The Circularity Metric measures the materials that are cycled back into the global economy after the end of their useful life. According to the CGRi (Circularity Gap Reporting Initiative) the global economy is now only 7.2% circular and the global situation is getting worse based on a rise in material extraction and use.

Increasing material extraction decreases global circularity. In 2018, it was measured at 9.1% which leaves a significant ‘circularity gap’, where more virgin materials are required for products and services.
